We were founded by the Junior League of Detroit in 1953 and have operated continuously since that time. We are a well-established and solid organization with significant impact. We serve 18,000 adults and their families each year in 21 Michigan counties, with the majority of our programs operating in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

We have received continuous accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) since 1991. In 2012, AWBS received the highest level of CARF accreditation possible. In 2009, AWBS was named Runner-Up in Crain’s Detroit Business Best Managed Nonprofit contest. AWBS is governed by a diverse, community-based Board of Directors who live and work in the metropolitan Detroit area; members come from the municipal, business, utility, health care consumer, legal, human resources, and financial sectors.

Additionally, people who receive services and their families are represented on our Board of Directors. We are always looking for community volunteers to serve on our boards and committees.
