The Need:

No local tax money flows to state charter schools. The General Assembly may appropriate additional state funding to partially offset the loss of local dollars when a charter application is denied by a local school board. This is commonly referred to as the "State Charter Supplement." The supplement is calculated based on the average total revenue of the five school districts with the lowest assessed valuation. In practice, this means that the state charter schools receive less per pupil than the average traditional public school.

$

per pupil gap

In 2017, the per pupil for state charter schools was $8,092, compared to $9,417 as reported by the Georgia Department of Education. This per pupil gap amounts to a significant hurdle for our schools ranging from competitive teacher salaries to classroom resources.
