The completed application form, curriculum vitae and photograph must be submitted to the Membership Chairman. Candidates must have presented at least one paper of scientific merit at a WNS annual meeting. The application is presented to the Executive Committee at the Spring Interim Meeting. They are Board certified by an appropriate Board and published in the scientific literature. They may vote at business meetings, serve and chair on committees. They may hold elected office.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSENIOR MEMBERS<\/p>\n<p>SENIOR MEMBERS are members who have requested a change in status if they have been an Active member for 20 years or have reached sixty years of age AND have been an Active member for at least three years. There is no meeting attendance requirements and they retain all active members\u2019 privileges except for chairing committees or holding elected office. They may return to active membership if approved by the Executive Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tASSOCIATE MEMBERS<\/p>\n<p>ASSOCIATE MEMBERS have no geographic limitation. They are engaged in the neurosciences who are not physicians. Associate members may include neuroanatomists, neurophysiologists, psychologists and others who obtain a PhD in their respective fields and predominantly work in research and\/or teaching. There is a limit of fifteen Associate members at any time and they must fulfill the same requirements as Active members except the requirement for Board certification. There is no meeting attendance requirements and they retain all active members\u2019 privileges except for voting, chairing committees or holding elected office.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPROVISIONAL MEMBERS<\/p>\n<p>PROVISIONAL MEMBERS fulfill the same requirements as active members but are awaiting Board certification. \u00a0They may serve on committees and attend business meetings without the vote. Provisional membership ends if board certification is not achieved within five years. Upon notification of Board certification, Provisional members will change status to Active members.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tNON-ACTIVE MEMBERS<\/p>\n<p>NON-ACTIVE MEMBERS are previously active, who remain interested in the WNS but unable to meet the meeting attendance requirements. They may not vote, serve on committees or hold elective office. They can return to active status upon attending a meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCORRESPONDING MEMBERS<\/p>\n<p>CORRESPONDING MEMBERS are previously active members in good standing who move away from the WNS geographic boundaries and wish to maintain membership. There are no limit on numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals not previously members and who practice outside the WNS geographic boundaries and who have shown significant contributions to neurological surgery or allied specialties as well as interest in the WNS can also become a corresponding member. This is limited to ten members at any time and they must fulfill the same requirements as Active members.<\/p>\n<p>Corresponding members have no meeting attendance requirement. They may serve on committees but may not vote or chair committees or hold elected office.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tHONORARY MEMBERS<\/p>\n<p>HONORARY MEMBERS are chosen from recognized leaders in the field of neurological surgery or its allied specialties and who are neither active nor corresponding members. There is no geographic limitation and no limit on numbers. They have all active membership privileges except for voting, being committee chairmen, or holding office. Active or Provisional membership is forfeited if four consecutive meetings are missed. Members from all categories except honorary members must pay annual dues. Membership is forfeited if annual dues are not paid for two consecutive years.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tApplication<br \/>\n\t<\/h2>\n<p>Dear Prospective Member,<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your interest in joining the Western Neurosurgical Society. We are delighted to welcome new members to the WNS and strongly believe that new members bring vitality and relevance to our Society.<\/p>\n<p>The WNS consists of approximately 200 board certified and eligible neurosurgeons from the region west of the Rockies (Alaska, Alberta, Arizona, British Columbia, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming). Other physicians and scientists from these and other States may also join. He completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Kansas in 1990. After a short stint as a clinical instructor at the University of Tennessee, he moved to Tucson, AZ in 1991 where he advanced from Assistant Professor to full Professor of Neurosurgery by 2002. He currently practices in Tucson in the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He has been the only program director at the University of Arizona neurosurgery residency which he founded in 2003. He served as Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery from 2004-2009. His practice interests include Neuro-Critical Care, Neurotrauma, Epilepsy Surgery and Surgical Pain Management and he has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Weinand is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, The Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the American Epilepsy Society. He has served as a guest examiner for the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He served as a neurosurgery representative on the American College of Surgeons\u2019 Committee on Trauma. <\/p>\n<p>Marty is married to his lovely wife, Shauna, who has worked as a neurotrauma ICU nurse for 16 years. She has nearly completed her graduate studies at the University of Arizona for her Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP). He has three children from his first marriage to Marcy Ann Coady, MD, a private practice psychiatrist whose untimely passing occurred in 2007. His oldest child Michael Alexander, is a physical therapist practicing in Philadelphia; a second son Jamie Drew is a first year Family Practice resident in the Southern New Mexico Family Practice Residency program in Las Cruces, NM, and his youngest is daughter Lauren Marie, a third year medical student at the University of Arizona in Tucson.<\/p>\n<p>Marty enjoys swimming laps and working out with a trainer as an antidote to his long busy days. His favorite hobby is working in his lab where he does gene expression research in epilepsy. He enjoys traveling and is an avid reader. <\/p>\n<p>As our new President, Dr. Weinand plans to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Emphasize increasing the membership of the Society.<\/li>\n<li>Nurture younger members to get involved in leadership of the Society.<\/li>\n<li>Grow corporate participation in support of the Society and its annual meetings.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Dr. Weinand has been an outstanding leader throughout his career.
