The vision of the campaign is to engage with the community through research, education and advocacy to support business success because business success drives community prosperity. In 2017, the WBA began focusing on the education component of the campaign in earnest and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatcombusinessalliance.com\/event-calendar\/past-events\/youth-initiative\/kickoff-event-photos\/\">officially launched<\/a> in February 2018 offering local high school students Junior Achievement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatcombusinessalliance.com\/event-calendar\/past-events\/youth-initiative\/become-a-job-shadow-site-host\/\">Job Shadow Curriculum<\/a>, which includes local business site tours and soft skills training.<\/p>\n<p><b>PHASE 1: Collaboration with Junior Achievement<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The goal of the Youth Engagement Initiative is to educate Whatcom County high school students on the opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship and to offer mentorship through the career decision making process. \u00a0The WBA is partnering with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.juniorachievement.org\/web\/ja-usa\/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Junior Achievement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (JA) <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2753 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whatcombusinessalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/JA-logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"80\" \/>to introduce the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.juniorachievement.org\/web\/ja-usa\/ja-programs?p_p_id=56_INSTANCE_abcd&amp;p_p_lifecycle=0&amp;p_p_state=maximized&amp;p_p_mode=view&amp;p_p_col_id=ja-maincontent&amp;p_p_col_count=1&amp;_56_INSTANCE_abcd_groupId=14516&amp;_56_INSTANCE_abcd_articleId=19556\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Job Shadow curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to Whatcom County high schools. In conjunction with the curriculum, the WBA will coordinate site tours of local businesses and provide opportunities for the students to engage in mock interviews and resume review with human resource professionals.\u00a0We plan to engage students in every high school in Whatcom County in the project in some capacity during the initial year of the program and to deepen the involvement in subsequent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Youth Engagement Initiative launched\u00a0February 7th, 2018 with a kick off event featuring a program of local business leaders.\u00a0 Our program speakers were Mike Andes (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessbootcamppodcast.com\/about-mike\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Augusta Lawn Care\/Business Boot Camp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erin Baker (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/erinbakers.com\/pages\/meet-the-team\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erin Baker\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), Kevin Menard (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transitionbikes.com\/\">Transition Bicycle Company<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and Anne-Marie Faiola (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brambleberry.com\/about-us.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bramble Berry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).\u00a0 See video from the event below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/iadU4Jojnps<\/p>\n<p><strong>PHASE 2: Whatcom Business Alliance Announces $50,000 Commitment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>April 19th, Whatcom Business Alliance (WBA) announced phase two of the Youth Engagement Initiative (YEI), YEI Interim Director Lin Nelson and contributed $50,000 seed fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatcombusinessalliance.com\/news-youth-engagement\/wba-announces-50000-commitment-to-youth-engagement-initiative\/\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4740 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whatcombusinessalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/image50K-check-photo-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>MOVING FORWARD&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ongoing activities of the Youth Engagement Initiative will build on member involvement. The WBA has formed a YEI Committee made up of business people, educators, community organizations, and workforce development leaders to guide the activities.
