It's Not a Sprint, It's a Marathon

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Boston Marathon will not take place. While we are understandably disappointed, we are in awe of the work that was done by #TeamHanscomFCU to prepare for this race.

Training for our team in 2020 was (from l. to r.) Dan Ziniti, Diane Welch, and Ray Phillips.

Back in 2000 when Hanscom FCU Chairman of the Board Ray Phillips (pictured right) was offered a coveted bib number from Credit Union Kids at Heart, a collaborative fundraising program, he was thrilled to join its four other charity runners at the Boston Marathon. “I figured it would be a one-time thing,” he said, “but then I met Andy.”

Four-year-old Andy Martin, Jr. was his assigned patient partner from Boston Children’s Hospital. Every year since, without fail, Phillips has run the marathon, through injury, illness, and, in the case of 2018, some of the worst weather on record. He’s been running it so long, he inspired Andy to race the Marathon as a wheelchair entrant four times.

This year would have been Ray’s 21st Boston Marathon, with Andy cheering him on. His teammates this year included Dan, Senior Vice President of Member Experience (pictured left), and Diane, Remote Support Specialist (pictured center). The are also part of the CU Kids at Heart team.

The money raised each year by #TeamHanscomFCU goes toward advancing lifesaving research at Boston Children’s Hospital aimed at the prevention, treatment, and/or cure of pediatric neurological diseases. Donations are contributed in full (100%) through CU Kids at Heart, with no portion deducted for administrative expenses.

Thank you for your support in 2020. With your help, we were able to raise over $30,000 in support of CU Kids at Heart. We look forward to hitting the finish line in 2021.

Credit Unions Kids at Heart

For over twenty-one years, Team Hanscom has remained committed to raising funds for Children’s Hospital Boston as part of the Credit Unions Kids at Heart team. Credit Unions Kids at Heart® (CU Kids at Heart) is a Massachusetts-based 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and one of the largest collaborative fundraising programs in the nation for the credit union community. Eastern Corporate Federal Credit Union (EasCorp) of Burlington, Massachusetts, founded CU Kids at Heart in 1996 with a small group of Massachusetts credit unions. Today, the organization includes dozens of participating credit unions and corporate sponsors nationwide.

CU Kids at Heart is dedicated to helping children lead healthy and happy lives. The organization and its supporters are committed to funding research activities aimed at the prevention, treatment, and/or cure of pediatric neurological diseases, including Moyamoya disease, Cerebral Palsy, pediatric epilepsy and other seizure disorders, and pediatric brain cancer. Funds raised support Boston Children's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and their research affiliates, to provide financial stability to these often underfunded research areas. Since its founding, CU Kids at Heart has raised nearly $7 million dollars.
